I have no doubt that you also sense that winter chill in the air.  The mornings are becoming darker, the days are growing shorter, and we are half way through the winter of 2023. Though sometimes I miss the summer sun, and delicious stone fruit varieties, there’s a lot to enjoy about fresh winter vegetables, yummy soups and all the citrus varieties as well.

Traditionally, July is a month of oversupply for vegetables, with produce coming from both southern growers and Queensland growers. With better weather conditions this year has pretty much gone according to plan, and we have ample supply from many places.  Southern farmers will finish their harvest by the end of the month, but Queensland growers will continue until early September. Our Victorian growers are still producing Kale varieties, Bok Choy, Pak Choy, Coriander, Parsley and many seasonal green vegetables.

Here are five of our favourite organic winter vegetables that are great for everyone who loves to eat seasonally.
  1. Kale: Kale is a lush green vegetable that grows well in cool climates, making it a favourite winter food. Kale is high in nutrients like vitamins A, C, and K and has a variety of health advantages. Salads, sautéed as a side dish, and soups and stews can all benefit from it.
  2. Brussels Sprouts: Brussels sprouts are little, cabbage-like vegetables with a distinct flavour. They include a lot of fibre, vitamins C and K, and antioxidants. To bring out their excellent flavour, these nutrient-dense micro cabbages are frequently roasted, steamed, or stir-fried.
  3. Broccoli: Broccoli is a multipurpose vegetable that is accessible all year but thrives during the cooler months. It is high in vitamin C and is a good source of fibre, calcium, and antioxidants. Broccoli can be steamed, stir-fried, roasted, or combined with other vegetables in soups and casseroles.
  4. Carrots: Carrots are root vegetables that are popular during the winter season. They are high in beta-carotene, fibre, and numerous vitamins and minerals. Carrots can be eaten fresh, sliced into salads, roasted, or used to stews and soups.
  5. Beetroot: A colourful root vegetable that provides colour and flavour to winter recipes. It contains a lot of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Beetroots can be roasted, boiled, or grated raw and added to salads. It can also be juiced or baked into tasty and healthful desserts.
